Ciudad Vieja Tour – Chicken Buses, Coffins and Nuestro Futuro School
We will start with a chicken bus ride (local bus) from Antigua to Ciudad Vieja (15 minutes away, fare covered by tour cost), and discuss the history of Ciudad Vieja, the site of Guatemala´s second capital city.
Our first stop will be to a chicken bus refurbishing shop, where they turn US and Canadian school buses into the chicken buses you see throughout the country, and you will learn exactly how these incredible transformations occur, how the public transport system works, as well as why being a bus driver is the most dangerous job in Guatemala.
Our next visit is to a family-owned coffin carpentry workshop, where we see how they put together, paint and decorate coffins. We will talk about the industry and the cultural traditions related to death in Guatemala.
Next, we take a short walk through the neighborhood where many of our families live who send their children to our school. We will discuss the socio-economic situation of the families and the difficulties that they face.
We finish back at our beautiful school Nuestro Futuro, where we will learn about the school, the different projects we run, the NGO ´Niños de Guatemala´, and how we are helping to break the cycle of poverty and help the community achieve a better life. We also have a snack while we rest!
We then return to Antigua by local bus, around midday or a bit after.
